Weekly Update 4/17 – 4/24

Hello everyone,

Just a reminder that the Grants department is still actively working and cycling through applications!

For the advocacy report for mental health, Andreas Lazarius, a member of the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Mental Health, is writing a one page report on the student opinion of mental health accessibility on campus. If you send me an email, I can put you in touch with him if you want to be part of the focus group that he is making in order to write this report.

We are rewarding six people with the RISE scholarship, and planning a dinner for them with a guest speaker as well.

We are waiting for affirmation from webhosting services to receive ownership over committees.berkeley.edu, and then will be drafting a template email for representatives to request formal approval of student summaries at meetings for posting to the Campus Committees site; approval from Chair Maslach has been granted, and a new system of approving student summaries will be phased in via individual chair agreement.

Applications for 2013-2014 representatives are out now! They will be accepted on a rolling basis, and interviews will be conducted next week.

Pavan Upadhyayula authored an OE Op-Ed in conjunction with Rebecca Miller of advertising services in Operation Excellence, and will be sending it in to the Daily Cal this week.

Our Administrative Committee is looking for a representative! If you or anyone you know would be interested in student advocacy, monitoring, and selecting campus representatives, please email me at aavp@asuc.org.
We are also still accepting applications for administrative committees at tinyurl.com/ASUCapps.

Our Academic Services department is organizing a reader exchange on sproul to conserve readers during finals week. We will also be preparing awards, and “Best of Berkeley” locations in the next few weeks, and ordering stickers to advertise. We will be working with a GIS student to create a more interactive map of the study spaces in Berkeley, especially focusing on Sunday study spots.

UGMP had a graduate student speaker this week.

The Student Committee on the Future of the Library finished the library bill that is in support of the student agenda for the Faculty Library Commission. We will be presenting to Senate on Wednesday, May 1st.

Small focus groups on Bearwalk and AC Transit will be held next Tuesday at 10 am with UCPD and transportation services.

That’s all for now!

Best regards,

Natalie Gavello

Weekly Report 3/7 – 3/13

Hello everyone!

This Thursday (tomorrow) night we are celebrating the Golden Apple Award going to Professor Dan Mulhern at 6 pm in 101 Moffitt! He is giving his “Ideal Last Lecture” which will be filmed and drawn (similar to a TED talk). You can learn more about Professor Mulhern at http://www.danmulhern.com/
We have been advertising and chalking to the event – please invite your friends and come!

Our policy department is having a Boalt meeting on March 21st; undocumented students who are interested in getting permits to get an education here at Cal can apply for deferred action. Senate meeting announcement is in two weeks!
We’re going to break up the Chancellor’s event into two separate events: making an honorary event for supporting AB 540 communities, and RISE is handling invites. They will be giving us a set date.

The RISE scholarship application is live on the ASUC site! Go to http://asuc.org/elected-officials/academic-affairs-vp/rise-scholarship-application/ if you want to take part! You will be attending regular meetings with Academic Senate Representatives and establishing meetings with representatives individually. We have found a successor to this position and will be presenting this appointee to the ASUC Senate at the end of April.

We are working to improve transparency in the Academic Senate and Administrative Committee. Andreas, Julia, and Alvin met with Lynn, the head of the administrative committees, to go over student needs, more frequent meetings, and agenda items.

Our service department sent out a survey for what students want to see in the bookstore. We met with Daley about the Books scholarship, and is looking to meet with Harry LeGrande also. Our meeting with the Bookstore Director on Wednesday went well, and we discussed having a reader exchange, signs to bring more students to the new store, and a raffle to increase traffic at the new store.

The Student Commission on the Future of the Library is also going well – Tom Leonard (the university librarian) spoke; proposal shave been submitted to Dean Hesse.

Our Grants department met with Conrev on Monday night to discuss transparency of rejecting students from AAVp Grants and this transition to next year. We decided to work with the five grants directors to reformat the way that they can structure a more formatted email if a student is not funded for a grant.

That’s all for this week!

Best,

Natalie Gavello

Weekly Updates 2/14 – 2/20

Hello everyone!

This week the Academic Senate Committee on Libraries met! They decided to try and get a temporary proposal to Chancellor Dirks regarding the student opinions on the libraries before the actual proposal is released in April.

Our Programs department is working on advertising for the Golden Apple Award. Again, if you haven’t done so yet – please go online and vote for your favorite professor at goldenapple.berkeley.edu.

The AAVP Office is going to be co-sponsoring the Internships Career Fair today and tomorrow, so definitely make an effort to go and check it out at the RSF!

Our policy department is currently working on a new bylaw to make it so that if Academic Senate representatives are not fulfilling their roles, then the Academic Senate director has the capability of asking them to withdraw, and then to receive approval to add another more qualified representative to the Academic Senate. Keep an eye out for this bylaw!

The last two spring committee appointments are being filled for the Spring ’13 semester. We are beginning to plan appointments of Academic Senate and Administrative Committee representatives for the Fall ’13 – Spring ’14 school year. Currently, we are reaching out to members of the Academic Senate to fulfill the position for next year, but want to make sure that they will get along with next year’s Office of the AAVP before we verify them.

If you know of anyone who would like to sit on a committee next year (the application comes out early April) or who wants to be the next Administrative Committee Director/Academic Senate Director, PLEASE let me know!

The RISE scholarship application is now live on the ASUC site. We will send an email to forward your constituencies to whom this might be relevant. The link to access the scholarship application is: http://asuc.org/elected-officials/academic-affairs-vp/rise-scholarship-application/

We are looking to create a focus group on advising vision. Please email me if you’re interested at aavp@asuc.org.

Our Thinkplace Committee met on Sunday to fill in some gaps in study locations amongst the cafes in Northside, and are currently working to put these on the website.

We are also going to send out a survey for what students want to see in the bookstores, so please keep an eye out for that as well!

That’s all for now!

Best regards,

Natalie Gavello

Weekly Updates! 2/7 – 2/13

Hi everyone!

This Tuesday we had our Grants Workshop at 7 pm in 114 Hearst Gym, and it was a huge success! Approximately 40 students turned out to learn about how to apply for Grants for our workshop.

We are advertising the Golden Apple Award this week! Look out for the flyers! Everyone, please vote for your favorite professor at goldenapple.berkeley.edu.

We are going to start an intern project where they survey the representative and effectiveness within the Academic Senate and Administrative committies, and rate how utilized they feel by the members.

The Academic Senate met last week and set up standards for DeCals that are relevant to the departments that they are in. We’re trying to get data for RRR violations through George Breslaur to test where they are happening and how to stop them.

The RISE Scholarship application will be available this weekend on the ASUC site. We will send you an email to forward your consitituencies to whom this might be relevant.

Our Operational Excellence director is currently writing an Op-Ed piece about Operational Excellence, so be sure to look out for that in the Daily Californian.

I also met with Bob Jacobsen about the vision of Advising. Please e-mail me with your critiques on the universal advising vision, they are very open to suggestions!

Our Thinkplace committee met on Tuesday at 7, and they solidified vision and leadership roles. They planned future meetings at tasks, and are going to meet again on Sunday to fill in some gaps on Northside cafes.

That’s all for this week!

Best regards,
Natalie Gavello

Weekly Updates! 1/31 – 2/6

Hello everyone!

This week we had our AAVP Office Retreat at the Bridges Rock Gym, which was a huge success!

Grants underwent training this past Saturday, so that everyone could better learn the standards for the year. Chalking for AAVP Grants are going to begin on Monday night right before the Workshop on Tuesday. We already created the Facebook event for it! The Grants Workshop is going to be Tuesday, February 12th at 7 pm in 114 Hearst. A CalLink has already been sent out to advertise; and Grants Directors have already been flyering to student groups. Please come!

We have been writing a bill to get funding for the Golden Apple Award. Don’t forget to vote for your favorite professor!

Our Policy Department met this week for the RISE scholarship to solidify the rubric and application and to get ready to send it out. Also, all the of the advertising has started this week. We should have all the scholarships in by the beginning of March so that the office can read through the applications and conduct interviews throughout March and then have scholarships ready by April. We need to plan a donation situation and our goal is to raise $50,000, which would allow us to give five scholarships per year for ten years.

We are collaborating with Bridges for Senior Weekend! High school seniors who have recently been accepted to UC Berkeley from the Bridges Community are going to come and attend workshops. We are talking to the director of the Bridges program to have AAVP led leadership workshops.

I’m in a show on Friday! Please come and see me! 8 pm in 2060 VLSB.

That’s all for now!
